Old Ford Housing Association has earned widespread praise for the impressive neighbourhood regeneration on its estates since they transferred from Tower Hamlets council. It has redeveloped 1,000 homes within budget and ahead of schedule, replacing tired, outdated tower blocks with modern low-rise homes.
Innovative and cost effective construction methods were used in the regeneration, including using re-crushed demolition material, which saved over £1 million in building costs.
Residents were consulted on the design of their homes and how the external environment, including green spaces, road layout and communal facilities should be managed and designed. A thriving, award winning community development programme has also been initiated.
In summer 2007, Old Ford marked the completion of the regeneration work with a tenant celebratory event. It had a lot to celebrate: since it began almost ten years ago, Old Ford has invested almost £100 million in the regeneration of Bow.
Tenants report a much higher level of satisfaction in their housing and services since the transfer to Old Ford and crime in the area has been significantly reduced, helped by innovative design solutions.
Old Ford continues its work on Tower Hamlets estates. Most recently, 2,293 homes on the Parkside estates transferred to Old Ford following a successful tenant ballot in June 2005. Old Ford Housing Association has pledged that £42.8 million will be spent over the next five years to improve homes and communities on Parkside.
“Residents worked closely with the Council and Old Ford to ensure that as well as rejuvenating the buildings in the area, community initiatives were put in place to encourage a more comprehensive regeneration.”
Rick Winfield, Chair of Old Ford Residents Association.
